R.P.D. Hicks particularly liked Winter and early Spring scenes. He found the medium of watercolour a quick and easy medium to transport. In his last months before he sadly died (due to his failing health), Percy took slides of the scenes he wanted to capture on canvas and then painted them in the warmth of his indoor studio. Consequently, later paintings have two dates, the one for when the slide was taken and the other for when the picture was completed.
